Have you ever heard the phrase that there is the power of life and death in the tongue? That quote is directly from the bible, “Death and life are in the power of the tongue, and those who love it will eat its fruits.” Proverbs 18:21. For some others, it may look like affirmations or being on higher frequencies, channeling love and gratitude or the opposite side like hate speech or negativity. I’m here to tell you that I have felt the difference from practice. Mind you, I only explored these statements as a personal experiment to see how much change I could feel, and this is how it started compared to how it’s going.

Turning Darkness into Light: A Journey of Personal Growth and Renewal

I came from a place of depression, anger, and sadness. Probably one of the darkest eras of my current lived experience! I was lost and blinded by darkness. I was thinking and speaking negatively of my worth, my body, my future outcomes, and so much more. When I tell you, I was filled with hate and full of despair. So much so that I didn’t care what I did because nothing had value. It manifested into careless behavior, drinking excessively, cursing like a sailor, listening to explicit music, nearly picking fights with my friends, aggression, asking to get hurt, being an unhealthy weight, and seeking feeling because I was numb.

At some point I embraced that I had darker tendencies until I had a wake up call. It’s not darker tendencies, it’s what I’m watering my life with! I was living in a garden of weeds that needed work to grow flowers. I tried a sober October in 2023 and felt the difference from drinking less and found joy in cleaning up my act further. I started gaining weight back and building muscle for once! I traded explicit music for tunes that were more glorifying and made me feel happier which started taking care of the sailor mouth. Eventually I was in a mental state to begin practicing gratitude and affirmations. Eventually, those seeds took root and started growing. Before I knew it, I was becoming more positive, thinking more clearly and seeking God more. I wrote out all that needed released from past traumas and finding things to become thankful for became easier. I was stating 10 gratitudes before my feet touched the floor after waking up. My perspective gutted itself from hurting and pain to humility and grace because I changed what I was watering my life with.

Weeds do not mean the garden is dead; the garden simply needs cultivating.
Weeds do not mean the garden is dead; the garden simply needs cultivating.

The Transformative Power of Mindful Living

Fast forward to 2026 and the contrast is stark. I have given up heavy drinking and dumped my collection of hard liquor, I feel conviction when I listen to music or watch shows, I am mindful of who I keep around me and what I invest in. I built this blog, I have plans to publish, I feel more positive and live out happiness in the little things. I dance anywhere, I smile so much it hurts, I am mindful of my speech especially towards others, I cry tears of joy! I am convinced that the words you speak or hear and what you consume have power to influence your life, but you choose the script! Whether it be a raging storm of destruction or a stronger relationship with God, family and friends, who you are, growth, peace, and with endless avenues of opportunity; you decide the outcome you want but be mindful of the power consumption carries.

Understanding we all process things differently, spiritually, mentally and emotionally, I dare you to try positivity and thankfulness and see what happens! I challenge you to discover if Proverbs 18:21 is true for you too. Speak life and remember you are not alone in this endeavor.
